School presentations are one of the more fun parts of my carving business. Over the years I have developed a program that includes a timed demonstration, followed up with an inter-active question and answer session. This could include a 60 minute "start to finish" power-carve for bigger groups, or 15 to 30 minute sessions for multiple smaller groups coming through at intervals. I normally bring along a display of several finished carvings and place them around perimeter of the carving area for the kids to "inspect" while I am working.

As a single parent of 2 sons, I have accumulated an extensive amount of experience in "communicating" with children of all ages, and ability levels. (Even adults!) From Boy Scout leader to soccer coach, home-room dad, and involvement with multiple school & community projects, I have come to enjoy and appreciate this time. I have also worked with a number of special needs groups like hearing, sight, or learning impaired.

Carving with a chainsaw is a very dynamic process; fast, loud & interesting! The question & answer session is however my favorite part. Whatever age level, the same questions tend to come up over and over in different ways. This gives me an opportunity to focus-in on key questions and explain how i do it, step by step. I place emphasis on getting involved in any type of art that is available to the students as a starting point.

At the end of the day, whatever carving I make for the demonstration becomes property of the school, or whom-ever sponsors me to be there. The finished carving remains as a permanent addition, and a reminder of the experience. This program also works well for summer camps, art clubs, or private exhibitions related to special events.
