This "Buck Rodgers" space ship was commissioned by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum for part of a collection of American Folk Art related to the air & space industry. I cannot however take credit for the wild paint job!
This
carving is an exact scale replica of an early human artificial
heart valve, designed by
Abstract feminine forms in Frank Curto Park, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. This is part of the "Penny Garden" project from Carnegie Mellon University Arts Department. The design is by Lily Yeh (villagearts.org), and is the center piece of a 45' diameter garden installation. Stephanie Flom (from CMU) was the main coordinator, and there were numerous volunteers involved as well. For my part, the 3 statues started out one Saturday morning as a 90' tall white-pine tree many miles away in another town. By lunch time that day it was being "dropped-off" (in 3 pieces), and before sunset they had been cemented in place, ready for me to carve the next morning. It was a unique collaboration of mixed medias and my only regret is that I do not have a good picture to share of the garden in full bloom. I do however have a few others;
